Summary: The debate about the conservation of buildings is part of a much wider discussion about the conservation of our environment. Building conservationists are commonly associated with resistance to change and a wish to retain the existing fabric at all costs, whereas protagonists of energy conservation or preservation of historic landscapes not only recognise the inherent need for change but welcome it as a means of improving the existing situation.
