DLG RECEIVES APPROVAL TO IMPROVE COMMUNITY FACILITIES IN COLLIERS WOOD, LONDON

National practice DLG Architects has received planning approval from London Borough of Merton to further extend the community facilities at Oasis Church in Colliers Wood, London.

Located between the residential streets of Christchurch Close and Fortesque Road, the site is currently empty. The existing church comprises of a former 1950’s two storey industrial building with a ‘90s hall accommodating 400 worshipers. Currently the community facilities at Oasis Church do not have the capacity to accommodate the 120 children that attend the Sunday school so 70 children relocate to Singlegate School.

DLG propose to develop the site with a two storey annex to the existing church building that will provide 807m2 of new space. This will create improved accommodation for the junior church comprising of new classrooms, toilets/storage facilities, Sunday School and two residential flats. The residential flats would be used for visiting preachers, temporary accommodation for church members and one flat which may provide permanent accommodation for a caretaker.

To encourage more natural light into the youth church and the rear of the flats, DLG has designed a garden terrace that provides some sheltered outdoor space in the predominately urban surroundings.

Tim Chandler, Associate Director at DLG Architects commented: “We are pleased to have been involved with this scheme and to have received planning consent in a timely manner for a scheme that will provide the people of Colliers Wood with community facilities more fit for purpose. The new community incentives launched from these new facilities will go a way to transforming the lives of the next generation in the area.

“At DLG we have recently successfully tackled a number of similar projects such as Canonbury Community Baptist Church, and Riverside Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Feltham”

The classrooms will be used for art groups, prayer and education. There will be a number of proposed services to benefit the local community such as careers workshops, finance and debt counselling, dance workshops and a nursery.
