DLG SUBMITS PLANNING APPLICATIONFORBUXTONTOWN CENTRE

National practice DLG Architects has this week submitted a planning application for an ambitious and exciting multi-million pound development in Buxton, Derbyshire on behalf of its clients Zurich Assurance and Sainsbury Supermarkets Ltd.

The plans to redevelop part of Buxton town centre include a new five-storey hotel, a 66,456 sq ft sq ft Sainsbury’s supermarket, a multi-storey car park and four new retail units that will transform the existing car park at Spring Garden Shopping Centre.

Mark Ralling of Threadneedle that has asset managed the centre since 2004 said: “These proposals are an exciting opportunity to deliver a high quality scheme which will certainly attract new visitors and bring economic benefits to the local area.”

Following a public consultation in October 2007, DLG’s proposed scheme will create and estimated 320 new jobs and includes a Sainsbury’s supermarket, an 82 roomed Premier Travel Inn, four new retail units totalling 16,748 sq ft, 629 parking spaces and improved pedestrian and cycle facilities. An important requirement of the new development was to maintain High Peak Borough Council’s existing pay and display car parking numbers whilst providing additional spaces for Sainsbury’s.

The new two-storey retail units will help create a central core and an improved public square that will act as a strong visual link with the existing shopping centre and Spring Gardens, the town’s main retail through fare.DLG designed the development to meet regeneration objectives set out by High Peak Borough Council to create an attractive aspect to the shopping centre as well as relating to the architectural characteristics of the local area.

Neil Swift, Associate Director at DLG Architects in Leeds comments: “Due to the cultural heritage of Buxton town centre it is important that the scheme fits into the fabric of the town.Wherever possible we will use local materials and the form of many of the proposed buildings take their cue from locally distinctive structures. The hotel will also include a ground floor restaurant that will add much needed vitality to an important entrance gateway to central Buxton.”

If planning permission is approved it is anticipated that the whole scheme could start on site at the end of 2009 with completion expected by December 2011.
